Kumartuli

A centuries-old labyrinth of clay and faith: this is Kumartuli. In this North Kolkata colony, lives are lived at the margins, yet from their hands come the idols that the city worships. The community is a paradox: a mix of master craftsmen and desperate dreamers for whom every day is a race against the next festival deadline and hunger. They’re perpetually behind schedule, but no one is in a rush - excuses, tea and cheap whiskey are always at hand. It seems impossible that the idols will ever be ready in time. But somehow, when time runs out, they always are.
